Master-Led Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage in London
Our Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage is for anyone seeking focused upper-body bodywork in London.
Many clients visit us for desk-related tension, tech neck, tight upper backs, stiff shoulders, scalp tension, muscle knots, trigger points or discomfort following long hours at a computer, commuting, training or repeated daily movement.
This treatment is designed for people who want focused attention rather than a full-body massage. Your session can concentrate on the shoulders, neck, upper back, shoulder blades, arms or scalp, depending on what feels most important that day.
Since 2009, Asiatic has been part of London’s massage and wellness community from our original Upper Street studio. Today, clients can choose between Asiatic Angel and Asiatic Highbury, both within easy reach of Central London.
Our studios provide a calm, private alternative to quick chair massage, with time for your therapist to listen, adapt the pressure and work carefully.
DESK, SCREEN AND EVERYDAY TENSION
Focused support for common areas
Tech neck and computer posture
Extended use of laptops, phones and other screens can leave the neck and shoulders feeling tight. Your therapist can focus on these areas using careful, controlled pressure adapted to your comfort.
Upper-back knots and shoulder-blade tension
Shoulder-blade tension is common among office workers, drivers, commuters, gymgoers and people who carry stress in the upper body. Focused bodywork can support comfort around areas that feel knotted, heavy or restricted.
Trigger points and localised tension
Some clients notice small, sensitive areas around the shoulders, upper back or neck, often described as trigger points. Your therapist can adjust the pressure and pace while keeping the treatment within your comfort level.
Stiff shoulders and everyday mobility
If your shoulders feel heavy, tight or restricted, your therapist can focus on the upper back, shoulders, neck and surrounding muscles. The intention is to support muscular comfort, body awareness and easier everyday movement.
When tension reaches the neck and base of the skull
Some clients book when desk work, sustained positions or posture-related discomfort leave them carrying tension around the neck, shoulders or base of the skull. Others experience this muscular tension alongside headaches they describe as tension headaches.
Your therapist can focus on the surrounding muscles and adapt the pressure throughout the session. Asiatic does not diagnose or treat headaches or postural conditions.
If headaches are frequent, severe, worsening, or do not improve with painkillers or relaxation, please speak to your GP or pharmacist before booking. Read NHS guidance about tension headaches.
PRESSURE · PACE · FOCUS
Your session is fitted, not formulaic
Instead of following one standard routine, the Asiatic approach begins with where you feel tension and how your upper body feels that day.
Your therapist may pay particular attention to commonly overworked areas such as the trapezius, rhomboids and levator scapulae, which can be involved when the neck, shoulders and area around the shoulder blades feel tight or restricted.
Pressure that fits
Gentle, medium or firm, adjusted throughout the treatment.
Focus where needed
Neck, shoulders, upper back, shoulder blades, arms, scalp or several connected areas.
Techniques selected for you
Kneading, rhythmic pressure, Thai bodywork, deep tissue techniques, myofascial-style techniques and assisted stretching where appropriate.
Time to work
Choose 45 minutes for a defined upper-body focus or 60 minutes when several connected areas need attention.
HELP ME CHOOSE
Which treatment fits what you need?
Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage
Choose this when you want focused attention across the upper back, neck, shoulders, shoulder blades or scalp without booking a full-body massage.
Deep Tissue Massage
Choose Deep Tissue Massage when you prefer slower, firmer pressure across one or more areas or want broader full-body work. It is generally performed with oil.
Sports Massage
Choose Sports Massage when recent training, repeated physical activity or heavily used muscles are the main reasons for booking. We will match the session with a practitioner experienced in sports massage.
Traditional Thai Massage
Choose Traditional Thai Massage if you prefer a fully clothed treatment combining rhythmic pressure, supported movement and assisted stretching without oil.
YOUR VISIT
What to expect from your Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage
When you arrive at our Upper Street studios, our team will welcome you into a calm setting designed to help you step away from the pace of London life.
Choose your studio1. Tell us what needs attention
Your session begins with a short conversation about where you feel tension, your preferred pressure, relevant lifestyle habits and any areas you would like your therapist to avoid.
2. Prepare in the way that feels comfortable
Depending on your preferences and session type, treatment may take place on a professional massage bed, reclining chair or traditional Thai futon.
Your therapist will explain how to prepare. If oil is used, you can undress only as much as feels comfortable and will remain appropriately covered with towels throughout the treatment.
3. Receive focused, adapted bodywork
Your therapist can focus on the neck, shoulders, upper back, shoulder blades, arms, scalp or base of the skull. Techniques may include a gentle warm-up, kneading, rhythmic pressure, Thai bodywork, deeper focused methods and stretching where appropriate.
4. Adjust the treatment at any time
Pressure can be gentle, medium or firm. Your therapist will check in, and you can ask for the pressure, pace or focus to be changed at any point.
A 45- or 60-minute appointment is a practical option when you want focused upperbody work without committing to a full-body treatment.
AFTER YOUR TREATMENT
Give your body time to respond
After your massage, we suggest drinking some water, moving slowly and allowing your body time to settle. Some clients feel lighter or more relaxed immediately. Others notice the fuller effect later that day or the following morning.
Gentle stretching, mindful movement and paying attention to sustained positions may help you remain comfortable after your session. A warm bath or compress may also feel pleasant following firmer pressure. It can be normal for heavily worked areas to feel slightly tender after a stronger massage. If you experience sharp, unusual, worsening or persistent pain, please speak to an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
We also suggest avoiding heavy lifting or intense exercise immediately after a session involving firmer pressure.
THE ASIATIC STANDARD
Experienced hands.
Pressure adapted to you.
Asiatic has been serving Islington’s massage and wellness community since 2009. Our Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage draws on attentive listening, experienced hands and bodywork principles shaped by Ben Pianese’s practice since 2001.
Our therapists understand how to adjust pressure, pace, focus and technique for the person in front of them. Each session is guided by what you tell us and how your body responds—not by one fixed sequence.
Our team includes VTCT-qualified therapists, while some practitioners also hold ITEC qualifications in sports massage. Everyone is fully insured.
We combine Thai bodywork, deep tissue techniques, clear communication and a calm boutique environment to provide a more considered alternative to quick chair massage.

HELPFUL ANSWERS
Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage questions
How long does a Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage last?
We suggest booking a 45- or 60-minute appointment. This provides time for your therapist to understand where you feel tension and focus on the areas that matter most that day. Choose 45 minutes for one defined upper-body focus. Choose 60 minutes when you would like more time across the neck, shoulders, upper back, shoulder blades, arms or scalp.
What should I expect during my session?
Each session at Asiatic starts with a quick chat about your comfort, pressure preference, and where you feel tension. Your massage therapist will help you get ready for your treatment. You can undress as much as you feel comfortable, and you’ll be covered with towels throughout the session. The massage may include gentle warm-up techniques, focused pressure, Thai bodywork, deep tissue methods, and stretching as needed. Your therapist will check in during the session to make sure the pressure feels right for you.
After your massage, you can take a moment to rest before you leave, and your therapist may give you some simple aftercare tips.
Is a Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage supposed to be painful?
A back and shoulder massage shouldn’t feel unbearable. Some spots may feel tender, especially around tight muscles, trigger points, or shoulder-blade tension, but the pressure should always stay within your comfort zone.
Let your therapist know if you want the pressure changed. Clear communication helps make your session effective, comfortable, and respectful of your body.
Can my session include a head or scalp massage?
Yes, you can request a head or scalp massage as part of your session. Let your therapist know your preferences when booking, and they can advise whether it can be included in your treatment.
Is this a suitable post-work massage?
Yes. Many clients book this treatment after work because it targets the areas most affected by desk work, laptop use, commuting, and daily stress. A 45-minute or 60-minute session can be a practical way to reset the upper body without booking a full-body massage.
How quickly will I notice the benefit, and how long will it last?
Many clients feel lighter, calmer, or more comfortable after their session, especially around the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Others notice the effect later that day or the next morning.
How long the benefits last depends on your lifestyle, posture, stress, activity, and the amount of tension you carry. Regular sessions, gentle movement, and paying attention to your posture can help you stay comfortable.
Can massage help with muscle knots and stiff shoulders?
Many clients book this treatment because they experience muscle knots and trigger points, trigger points, stiff shoulders or upper-back tightness from sedentary work, desk posture, laptop use or a busy London lifestyle.
A focused Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage can help improve comfort in these areas by using careful pressure, Thai bodywork, deep tissue methods, and stretching as needed. This can help your upper body feel more open and may support general mobility.
It is also a popular post-work massage for clients near Angel, Islington and Highbury who want focused upper-body bodywork after a long day at a desk.
Can Back & Shoulder Massage support posture-related discomfort and mobility?
Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage may support body awareness, mobility, and muscular comfort, especially if you spend long hours at a desk, use a laptop, commute, or carry upper-body stress.
Massage doesn’t “fix” posture on its own, but regular sessions, stretching, movement, and attention to your posture can help you feel more open, comfortable, and balanced.
Can I book if I experience tension headaches?
Yes, a Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage may help ease muscle tension associated with tension headaches. Your therapist can focus on tight muscles around the neck, shoulders and upper back. If your headaches are frequent, severe or unusual, seek medical advice before booking.
Can I book a massage for back or neck pain?
Yes, this treatment may help relieve muscular tightness and stiffness in the back, neck and shoulders. Please tell your therapist about your symptoms before your session so they can adjust the pressure and techniques. If you have severe, unexplained or persistent pain, consult a healthcare professional first.
Can I book near Angel station or Highbury & Islington station?
Yes. Our Angel studio is at 93 Upper Street, London N1 0NP, near Angel station. Our Highbury studio is at 262 Upper Street, London N1 2UQ, near Highbury & Islington station.
Both studios are convenient for clients in Angel, Islington, Highbury, Canonbury, King’s Cross, the City and nearby North London areas.
What does Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage cost?
The cost depends on the session duration and available treatment options. Please check our booking page for current pricing or contact us for further details.
How does this differ from Deep Tissue or Sports Massage?
A Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage focuses specifically on relaxing the muscles in your upper back, neck and shoulders. Deep Tissue Massage uses slower, firmer pressure to target deeper muscle tension, while Sports Massage is tailored to physical activity, muscle recovery and sport-related needs. Your therapist can help you choose the most suitable treatment for your goals.
