Ben Pianese

The hands-on experience behind the Asiatic Standard

25 years of bodywork have taught Ben to listen first, observe carefully and adapt the treatment to the person — not make the person fit the routine.

CLIENTS SINCE 2007

Some client relationships span almost two decades

50,000+ is an estimate of Ben's individual hands-on practice based on his long-term working pattern during a high-demand career. It is separate from Asiatic's combined studio treatment count.

BEFORE THE TREATMENT BEGINS

Experience changes what you notice.

Before a treatment begins, Ben is already paying attention. How someone walks into the studio. How they sit. How freely they move. Where movement appears guarded. How the body responds naturally before hands-on work begins. After thousands of hours working with different people, observation has become as important to Ben as technique. These observations are not a medical diagnosis. They provide clues about what questions to ask, what areas may be worth exploring and how the session might need to adapt.

“Sometimes the place where someone feels the tension isn't the whole story.”

Two people may book exactly the same massage.
That does not mean they should receive exactly the same treatment.

THE ATELIER PHILOSOPHY

Bodywork should be fitted, not formulaic.

Ben has been connected to Islington since 1997.

Over those years he watched Upper Street evolve while remaining drawn to its independent shops, skilled trades and tradition of personal service. That idea eventually became part of Asiatic.

A tailor does not begin with the assumption that everybody has the same proportions.

Ben does not believe a practitioner should begin with the assumption that every body needs the same massage sequence.

“Like a tailor adjusts a garment, we adjust the pressure, pace and focus to the person in front of us.”

PRESSURE · PACE · FOCUS · TECHNIQUE

This is what Ben means when he describes Asiatic as an atelier.
Not a theme. A way of working.

25 YEARS OF LEARNING

The qualifications are milestones.
The practice is the education.

Ben's professional training began in 2001, but his education in bodywork never really stopped. Over more than two decades he has explored anatomy, sports and remedial massage, Traditional and Advanced Thai Yoga Massage, neuromuscular approaches, myofascial techniques, assisted movement and other hands-on methods. Some approaches concentrated primarily on physical structure. Others explored movement, breath, touch, awareness and the way people experience and hold tension. Ben became increasingly interested in what connects them.

Formal bodywork training begins.

CHIANG MAI

A technique that felt strangely familiar.
Ben's first deeper experience of Thai bodywork in Chiang Mai did not feel entirely like discovering
something new.

It felt more like recognising something he had intuitively understood since childhood — that touch, movement and the person's wider experience of their body can be interconnected.

SPORTS + REMEDIAL

Further training broadened Ben's understanding of soft tissue, movement, anatomy and focused hands-on work.

THAILAND + CONTINUING STUDY

Repeated visits, different teachers and different approaches continued to challenge and refine his
thinking.

TODAY

Ben is less interested in how many techniques a practitioner knows and more interested in something harder:

HOW BEN WORKS

Stronger isn't automatically better.

1

OBSERVE

What is the person already showing before and during the treatment?

2

TEST + RESPOND

Notice how the person responds rather than assuming that more pressure is always required.

3

ADAPT

Pressure, pace, positioning, focus and technique can change as the session develops.

The service tells us where to start. The person tells us where to go next.

THE ASIATIC STANDARD

Founder-led is not simply a phrase above the door.

Ben's hands-on experience helped shape Master-Led Somatic Bodywork™, Asiatic's founder developed
framework for personalised massage and bodywork. But his involvement does not stop at philosophy.
Ben remains actively involved in what happens inside the studios.

1

TRAIN

Ben works directly with practitioners, sharing techniques, principles and lessons developed through decades of hands-on practice.

2

ASSESS

He observes pressure, positioning, movement, pace, communication and the practitioner's ability to adapt.

3

MENTOR

Technique can be taught. Judgement takes longer. Ben helps practitioners develop beyond simply memorising massage sequences.

4

SHAPE

He contributes to how Asiatic treatments evolve and how different techniques are integrated appropriately.

5

LISTEN

Client feedback is reviewed and used to continue refining both treatment standards and the wider Asiatic experience.

“Master-Led”

does not mean that Ben personally delivers every treatment. It means that the standards themselves have an experienced practitioner behind them.

THE LONG VIEW

Twenty-five years of bodies in motion.

Across his career Ben has worked with runners, dancers, actors, CEOs, office professionals, fellow therapists and people from many different walks of London life. Some came once. Others returned. Some client relationships have continued since 2007.

TODAY

SHAPING ASIATIC

The same eye for detail shaped the place around the treatment.

Ben's involvement in Asiatic extends beyond hands-on bodywork. He conceived the Asiatic name, developed the website and has played a central role in shaping the physical identity of both Upper Street studios. From room layouts and furniture to colour, limewash finishes, texture and atmosphere, the spaces have continued to evolve rather than being treated as finished objects. The recent redesign of Asiatic Angel continued that process from the ground up.

AFTER 25 YEARS

“The more you know, the less you know. The less you know, the more you know.”

Ben Pianese

Twenty-five years of practice have made Ben more curious, not more absolute. Every person introduces another variable. Every new technique challenges an old assumption. For Ben, expertise is not reaching the point where there are no questions left. It is knowing enough to keep asking better ones.

Questions about Ben's bodywork and philosophy

What bodywork qualifications does Ben Pianese hold?

Ben began formal bodywork training in 2001 with an ITEC Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Body Massage and later completed an ITEC Diploma in Sports and Remedial Massage.

His wider study has included Traditional and Advanced Thai Yoga Massage, neuromuscular approaches, myofascial work, trigger-point techniques, muscle-energy approaches and other handson and movement-based methods.

Ben regards these qualifications as milestones rather than the end of his education. His approach today reflects more than two decades of applying, comparing and questioning different methods in real treatment-room situations.

What is Master-Led Somatic Bodywork™?

Master-Led Somatic Bodywork™ is Asiatic's founder-developed approach to personalised massage and bodywork, shaped by Ben Pianese's years of hands-on experience. It combines soft-tissue techniques, assisted stretching, focused pressure, movement awareness and careful attention to how the body responds. Rather than following a predetermined sequence, the therapist adapts each session to the client's tension patterns, posture, breathing and comfort. The philosophy is simple: skilled bodywork should be responsive, precise and tailored to the individual rather than based on a fixed routine.

How does Ben's approach differ from a fixed massage routine?

Ben believes that no two bodies should receive exactly the same treatment. Instead of following a standard sequence, he observes posture, movement, muscle tension and how each person responds to touch. He combines techniques such as deep tissue massage, assisted stretching, myofascial work and focused pressure, adjusting his approach throughout the session. This creates a more personal, movement-aware treatment that responds to individual needs rather than simply repeating the same routine.

What does Structural Tailoring mean?

Structural Tailoring is Ben's way of describing bodywork that is carefully adapted to each person's physical structure, movement and comfort.Much like a tailor adjusts a garment to fit an individual, a therapist adjusts pressure, pace, angle and technique according to the client's body and response. It forms part of Asiatic's Master-Led Somatic Bodywork™ philosophy, where treatment is shaped by observation, skilled touch and continuous adjustment rather than a one-size-fits-all method.

Why does Ben describe Asiatic as an atelier?

Ben uses the word atelier to express his belief that massage is a skilled craft requiring patience, precision and personal attention.Traditionally, an atelier is a workshop where experienced craftspeople create work tailored to the individual. Ben sees a connection between this philosophy and thoughtful bodywork, where every treatment is shaped by the person receiving it.For Asiatic, atelier represents a commitment to skilled hands, careful listening and personalised treatments within its independent Upper Street studios.

Has Ben really delivered more than 50,000 massage and bodywork sessions?

Yes. According to Asiatic's published account, Ben Pianese has delivered more than 50,000 hands-on bodywork sessions across over two decades of professional practice in London. His experience spans Thai massage, sports and remedial bodywork, deep tissue techniques and personalised treatments for a wide range of clients. This extensive practical experience has helped shape Master-Led Somatic Bodywork™, reinforcing Ben's belief that lasting professional skill develops through continuous observation, adaptation and hands-on practice.

What influence has Thailand had on Ben's work?

Thailand has played an important role in shaping Ben's understanding of massage, movement and the art of skilled touch. He has travelled to Thailand more than twenty times and studied traditional Thai massage at established schools, including Wat Pho and Loi Kro in Chiang Mai. These experiences introduced him to different approaches to assisted stretching, rhythmic pressure, body awareness and Thai hospitality.Rather than copying a single tradition, Ben has integrated these influences with his anatomical training and remedial bodywork experience to develop a personalised approach that respects both traditional techniques and individual needs.

Who has Ben worked with during his career?

Throughout his career, Ben has worked with a diverse range of clients, from office professionals experiencing everyday tension to active individuals seeking movement-focused bodywork and long-term clients receiving regular treatments. His professional experience includes working in established London wellness environments, including Covent Garden, Marylebone and Islington. He has also worked alongside osteopaths, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals. These experiences have strengthened his understanding of different client needs and reinforced his belief in thoughtful, individualised bodywork.

Can Ben diagnose or treat medical conditions?

Ben is a qualified massage and bodywork practitioner, not a medical doctor. His work focuses on soft-tissue tension, movement awareness, physical comfort and personalised hands-on care rather than diagnosing medical conditions. While his remedial training helps him recognise areas of muscular tension and adapt treatments appropriately, massage is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, physiotherapy or specialist healthcare.Clients experiencing unexplained pain, significant injuries or ongoing medical concerns should consult a qualified healthcare professional before booking.
